Georgia Ends Michigan’s Season

By · Sunday, May 31, 2009 · 1:03 AM |  Share | Leave a Comment

Unlike Friday’s 1-0 loss to Florida, Michigan and Georgia actually scored quite a few runs on Saturday. The end result, however, was no different for the Wolverines. Michigan lost 7-5 in a back and forth game that ultimately went Georgia’s way. Since this is Michigan’s second loss at the WCWS, the Wolverines have been eliminated and their season is over.

Florida Edges Out Michigan 1-0

Florida beat Michigan last night thanks to a solo home run in the sixth inning. That was the only run scored in the entire game, as this was a pitchers’ duel. The Gators came out on top, winning 1-0 and sending Michigan to the losers’ bracket, where the Wolverines will play either Georgia or Missouri at 7 p.m.

Friday Quick Hits: Michigan Defeats Alabama, Moves on to Face Florida

By · Friday, May 29, 2009 · 12:36 PM |  Share | Leave a Comment
  • Michigan beat Alabama with relative ease last night, winning its opening game at the WCWS by a score of 6-1. The Wolverines will take on Florida tonight at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. Florida beat Michigan 4-0 way back in February and is 61-3 this season.
  • The Michigan men’s golf team has advanced to the NCAA match play finals after finishing sixth in the stroke play round. Only eight teams are still alive for a national title, and Michigan’s next step in reaching that goal is to beat USC, which finished tied for third in the stroke play round.

UPDATE: Michigan beat USC before losing to Texas A&M in the semifinals.

  • Ben Ballantine, a 6-7 pitcher from California, has committed to Michigan.
  • Michigan’s second annual BBQ at the Big House is tomorrow.
  • Michigan and Ohio State jointly announced that they are no longer going to print sports media guides in order to cut costs and begin to “develop new media initiatives.” Wisconsin separately announced that they are also going to stop printing media guides.
  • Former Michigan and Lions player Terry Barr passed away on Thursday at the age of 73.
  • The Austin American Statesman’s Kirk Bohls has the right idea when it comes to the USA Today Coaches Poll: Current coaches shouldn’t be part of the voting process. They don’t have the time to put together an accurate poll, and even if they did there would still be a clear conflict of interests. (HT: Dr. Saturday)

Thursday Quick Hits: Jordan Paskorz Commits to Michigan

By · Thursday, May 28, 2009 · 12:27 PM |  Share | 3 Comments
  • Michigan plays Alabama in the Women’s College World Series at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
  • Pennsylvania defensive end Jordan Paskorz committed to Michigan on Wednesday. Paskorz is an ideal fit in Michigan’s defense as a hybrid defensive end/linebacker (a “spinner,” as the position is known to most), and is rated as a three-star at DE on both Rivals and Scout. ESPN grades him as a 78 and has an evaluation that talks about his versatility. Paskorz’s other offers are from Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Virginia, and Bowling Green.
  • John Beilein is going to be a court coach for USA Basketball’s U19 team trials.
  • Votes for the final USA Today Coaches Poll of the college football season will no longer be made public in 2010, giving it even less credibility than it had in the first place. Why coaches, who rarely even get a chance to watch other teams outside of their opponents, get to play a part in determining the national championship game and the BCS is beyond me. I imagine many coaches don’t even actually vote and have someone do it for them, but that just speaks to how little credibility the poll has.
  • If the Big Ten ever adds another team to the conference, Joe Paterno does not want it to be Notre Dame. He would prefer Rutgers, Syracuse, or Pittsburgh.
  • Memphis reportedly has committed major violations in basketball, including Derrick Rose allegedly cheating on his SAT.

  • Michigan will play No. 4-seeded Alabama in the Women’s College World Series on Thursday. The game begins at 7 p.m. (on ESPN), and the winner moves on to face the winner of the Florida-Arizona game. The loser heads to the loser’s bracket, where it takes only one more loss to end a team’s season.
  • Similar to Tom Izzo’s amazing milestone of having every player who stays for four years and was recruited by him go to a Final Four, every player Carol Hutchins has recruited since 1991 has gone to a College World Series.
  • Michigan has officially announced the addition of two preferred walk-on basketball players, Eso Akunne and Josh Bartelstein.
  • Ben Cronin is ready to get back on the basketball court.
  • The athletic department is offering a football season ticket package that is for only this year.
  • Could Michigan play Northwestern at Wrigley Field in 2011? Apparently it is a possibility, but that is the only information on it right now.
  • South Carolina’s defensive line coach thinks that star ratings for recruits are a “scam.”
