Tuesday Quick Hits: Jason Forcier Won’t Re-Join Football Team
- Jason Forcier will not play for Michigan and is moving on from football. I don’t know if the issue was acceptance into Michigan’s grad school or being made eligible by the NCAA, but it sort of sounds like it was the former. Rich Rodriguez talked about how Forcier wants to get a job and “start that phase of his life,” so it doesn’t exactly sound like he is going to be in grad school. I could be wrong, but that makes more sense than the NCAA denying him eligibility, as his transfer to Michigan was for academic reasons, not football.
- Baseball recruit Daniel Fields has decided to sign with the Tigers rather than play for Michigan.
- Some of Michigan’s football commits attended the Lions’ morning practice today.
- Michigan has finally confirmed that it will play UConn in next year’s season-opener and in 2013.
- Everybody seems to think that Michigan Stadium will be louder now that the majority of the structural renovation is complete. I don’t doubt that crowd noise escaped in the past because of how Michigan Stadium was built, but fans still need to be louder for the Big House to be louder. It doesn’t all boil down to the structure of it.
- Tickets are now on sale for the Old Spice Classic, which Michigan will play in starting on Thanksgiving.
- Greg Paulus has been named Syracuse’s starting quarterback. No offense to him, but I’m hoping he doesn’t play too well this coming season. If he does, Michigan will get another dose of negative press for missing out on him. That would just suck big time since it was really the negative press that ended Michigan’s pursuit of Paulus in the first place. When he was in Ann Arbor to check out a spring practice, it became national news and quickly turned into negative PR for Rich Rodriguez and Michigan. The whole story was blown out of proportion, and once that happened Rodriguez ended the story by saying that Michigan was no longer pursuing Paulus. Of course, ESPN didn’t make a big story out of that bit of news, though they probably would have misinterpreted it as well if they had even tried.
Thursday Quick Hits: Rodriguez Discusses Grady Brothers
- Senior pitcher Chris Fetter was drafted in the ninth round by the San Diego Padres.
- Two incoming freshmen, Daniel Fields and Derek Dennis, were also drafted. Fields was taken by the Tigers in the sixth round and Dennis went to the Rays in the tenth round. It appears that Dennis will pass up the Rays and go to Michigan, but no word yet on what Fields will do. An opportunity to play for his hometown team has to be enticing.
- Adam Harris has qualified for the 100-meter dash final at the NCAA championships.
- Adam Rittenberg got an update on Kevin Grady from Rich Rodriguez:
“He’s taking care of his responsibilities from the previous thing that he had,” Rodriguez said. “His status with the team will be based on what he does over the next several months.”
Rodriguez also shared this about Kelvin Grady:
“He’s an outstanding athlete and he sees an opportunity,” Rodriguez said. “We kind of teased him about it for about a year now. We would say, ‘Why don’t you play both?’ because he was a really good high school [football] player.
“He’s going to have an opportunity. He’s obviously been out for a couple years, but he’s still a young guy and he’s been active and he’s been training. So he’s going to be in pretty good shape, and we’ll see what happens.”
I still don’t understand why Kevin is on the team given what has happened, but I guess I’ll trust Rodriguez on this. If Kevin doesn’t do whatever he is required to, though, I think it’s time for both parties to move on.
- Lee Moffie and Lindsay Sparks are going to join the hockey team as walk-ons.
- WolverineHistorian has uploaded an Anthony Thomas tribute video.
- Right around this time each year, hype really starts to pick up for the newest NCAA Football video game. This year is a bit different, however, as this year’s version of the game isn’t looking all that promising. Based on what I’ve gathered, many people think it is more like NCAA 09.5 than NCAA 10, meaning that there have been few noticeable improvements to the game. What’s more, the rosters that made the final version of the game are downright awful. Players that are on teams shouldn’t be; ratings are inaccurate more than usual; and to top it off some teams don’t even have any freshmen. I guess I’ll have to wait until the game comes out and I play it to make a final judgment on it, but for the first time in a long time I’m considering not even buying it. Madden 10 looks amazing, as does NHL 10, and both of those games seem like a better use of $60.
Friday Quick Hits: Michigan Defeats Alabama, Moves on to Face Florida
- Michigan beat Alabama with relative ease last night, winning its opening game at the WCWS by a score of 6-1. The Wolverines will take on Florida tonight at 9 p.m. on ESPN2. Florida beat Michigan 4-0 way back in February and is 61-3 this season.
- The Michigan men’s golf team has advanced to the NCAA match play finals after finishing sixth in the stroke play round. Only eight teams are still alive for a national title, and Michigan’s next step in reaching that goal is to beat USC, which finished tied for third in the stroke play round.
UPDATE: Michigan beat USC before losing to Texas A&M in the semifinals.
- Ben Ballantine, a 6-7 pitcher from California, has committed to Michigan.
- Michigan’s second annual BBQ at the Big House is tomorrow.
- Michigan and Ohio State jointly announced that they are no longer going to print sports media guides in order to cut costs and begin to “develop new media initiatives.” Wisconsin separately announced that they are also going to stop printing media guides.
- Former Michigan and Lions player Terry Barr passed away on Thursday at the age of 73.
- The Austin American Statesman’s Kirk Bohls has the right idea when it comes to the USA Today Coaches Poll: Current coaches shouldn’t be part of the voting process. They don’t have the time to put together an accurate poll, and even if they did there would still be a clear conflict of interests. (HT: Dr. Saturday)
Friday Quick Hits: Softball Begins Super Regional Tonight
- Pitcher Chris Fetter was named the baseball team’s MVP this season.
- The softball team begins its Super Regional against Baylor tonight at 8 p.m. on ESPN. Tomorrow’s first game begins at 2:30 p.m., and if a third game is necessary, it is expected to start at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday’s games will also be on ESPN.
- MVictors has audio of Carol Hutchins appearance on WTKA yesterday.
- Sam Webb wrote an article about Pahokee, FL.
- WolverineHistorian uploaded a new video that showcases Michigan’s game-winning field goals:
Wednesday Quick Hits: U-M the Leader for Two Miami Recruits
- Rich Rodriguez spoke to alumni in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. (John Beilein was also there, but there isn’t video of his speech yet.)
- There is also a video of Rodriguez singing “The Victors” at the alumni event.
- Michigan is currently the leader for Torrian Wilson, the second-best offensive guard in the nation on Rivals. Wilson attends Miami Northwestern High School, which historically has been a feeder school to the U. Hopefully that is changing, though, as running back Corvin Lamb, a teammate of Wilson’s, also has Michigan listed as his leader right now.
- Catcher John DiLaura committed to Michigan but will not be on scholarship.
- Yahoo! Sports is reporting that USC basketball coach Tim Floyd gave a direct payment of $1,000 to an associate of O.J. Mayo who “allegedly lavished Mayo with improper benefits while the guard starred for the Trojans.” If the NCAA even did a little bit of investigating, you would think it’s only a matter of time until both the USC basketball and football teams are hit with violations. It’s not like there are only rumors out there about Mayo and Reggie Bush. There have been detailed investigations done by Yahoo! Sports, ESPN, and other outlets, and all have revealed things that constitute violations by USC.
Monday Quick Hits: Softball Wins Big Ten Title, Will Host Regional
- 1,369 returning students have bought 2009-10 basketball season tickets. Once incoming freshman get a chance to purchase tickets, that number could easily rise to 2,000. Considering only 480 season tickets were sold last year, this is great news. The Maize Rage should be filled for every game and the atmosphere at Crisler should be taken to a new level. Hopefully the team will continue to improve and ticket sales will get to the point where the bleachers have to be expanded. Right now the plan is to seat students in the bleachers until they fill up and then put them behind the band. As far as I know, once those two sections are filled, students then have to sit in the upper deck, so I suggest students get to games as early as possible next season.
- The Michigan softball team, which won the outright Big Ten title by beating Michigan State on Friday, is the No. 5 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Michigan will host a double-elimination regional consisting of Notre Dame, Cleveland State, and Miami (Ohio) this weekend. Miami is the No. 4 seed in the regional, meaning it will play Michigan in the opening round. Michigan had its 21-game winning streak snapped by MSU on Saturday in a 2-1 loss.
- Michigan pitcher Chris Fetter played against Greg Oden in high school.
- Tyrone Wheatley talked with the Ann Arbor News about his coaching aspirations. Wheatley is currently Eastern Michigan’s running backs coach.
- Brian Griese went on WTKA last week.
Tuesday Quick Hits: Cislo Out for the Season?
- Michigan second baseman and captain Kevin Cislo may be out for the season with a shoulder injury.
- Two of Michigan’s senior basketball players from last season are moving on to a life without basketball. David Merritt is hoping to launch a business venture in Ann Arbor this fall, and C.J. Lee has another year left in school and is doing an internship this summer.
- Larry Foote was released by the Steelers on Monday and is going to visit the Lions tomorrow. He has expressed interest in signing with the Lions, so let’s hope he gets a contract done tomorrow. Detroit needs a middle linebacker, and it’s rare that a free agent from a Super Bowl team wants to play for the Lions.
Monday Quick Hits: Michigan No-Hit by Ohio State
- Tickets for the Michigan-Wisconsin hockey game at Camp Randall Stadium go on sale today.
- Though Michigan did beat Ohio State in baseball on Sunday, the Wolverines were no-hit in Saturday’s first game and beat 9-6 in the second meeting of the day.
- The Free Press took a look at how disappointing the 2005 football recruiting class turned out to be.
- LaMarr Woodley attended the premiere of the new X-Men movie, which focused on the Wolverine character. I’m assuming Woodley went to the premiere because he has a big tattoo of the Wolverine on his right arm (as pictured in the link).
