Demar Dorsey Officially Announces His Decision: It’s Michigan

Florida safety Demar Dorsey just confirmed the previous reports that he will be attending the University of Michigan, announcing his decision to become a Wolverine at his school’s signing day event.  Dorsey picked Michigan over Florida State and USC, bringing what can only be described as a wild recruitment to an end.  Just last week it looked like Dorsey was for sure going to FSU, and even today many people believed that to be the case.  Michigan made up some serious ground in recent weeks, though, and in the end Dorsey opted for the Wolverines.

Dorsey is a 4-star safety on both Rivals and Scout, but on ESPN he has 5 stars and is the 12th best recruit in the country.  I’m not sure why there is such a big difference, but Dorsey definitely looks like a big-time football player.  He participated in the ESPN Under Armour game (actually, that probably explains the difference) and seemed like one of the top players on the field.  Back then he was still set to become a Florida Gator, but it just goes to show you how quickly things can change in the recruiting world.

One of the things that Michigan had working in its favor is that Dorsey is Denard Robinson’s cousin.  He visited Michigan the weekend of the UConn basketball game, and many people figured it was nothing more than a visit to see his cousin.  The chances of landing Dorsey a few weeks ago seemed slim, but like I said, Michigan made up some serious ground in the late stages of his recruitment and ended up landing the “No Fly Zone,” as he is nicknamed.

Dorsey has some serious talent on the football field, but he also brings quite a bit of personality and swagger to his game.  Throughout the ESPN Under Armour game he was dancing and just having fun, as evidenced in the video below.

After losing out on both Rashad Knight and Sean Parker, this was definitely a great way to cap off the 2010 recruiting class, bringing the total number of signees up to 27.  It has a mix of some big-name players, a lot of 3 stars, and some sleepers.  More than anything, though, it will bring a lot of added depth to Michigan in the future and help fill some needs on both sides of the ball.  Say what you want about the star ratings and the rankings for the class, but considering Michigan has gone 8-16 in the last two seasons and has missed out on a bowl game both years, I am more than happy with the class Rich Rodriguez and company put together.

UPDATE: Rich Rodriguez just said during his press conference that Dorsey will start off at cornerback and later learn the safety position.
