Stick a Fork in Them: Michigan Loses to Indiana 71-65

Any hope Michigan had of making the NCAA tournament is basically gone barring a miracle finish to the season.  Outside of Stu Douglass and Zack Novak, Michigan played absolutely terrible today and lost to Indiana 71-65.  That’s right, Michigan managed to lose to an Indiana team that just lost its leading scorer to a season-ending injury.  Not only is a loss like this a resume killer, but it shows just how mediocre Michigan is.  If it can’t beat Indiana, then what is going to happen against a schedule that only gets tougher as the season goes by?  At this point an NIT berth doesn’t even seem like a sure thing.  Unless both Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims get it together, this team is going to lose a lot more games during the course of the rest of the season.

As mentioned, really only Stu Douglass and Zack Novak played well for Michigan.  Stu finished with 16 points and never came out of the game, and Novak scored 18 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.  Like usual, Novak gave it his all on every possession and actually also had 3 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block.  Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims had 13 and 12 points, respectively, but neither looked impressive.  Both picked up quite a few dumb fouls, as Jay Bilas pointed out numerous times, and neither seemed to be in the game mentally.  It didn’t help that the rest of the team didn’t do much, either.  Anthony Wright can’t make a shot.  Matt Vogrich can’t play defense.  LLP dropped a goose egg today.  Darius Morris made some good plays, but he only scored 2 points in 20 minutes.  Zack Gibson did score 4 points and grab 5 rebounds in only 8 minutes, which was good, but that was just about the only production from Michigan’s bench.

Michigan will get a chance to rebound on Sunday when Ohio State comes to town.  To put it nicely, if there is any hope of getting this season turned around in the right direction, Michigan has to beat the Buckeyes.  Tip off is set for 4:30 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
