Michigan Cruises to 76-46 Victory Over Coppin State

For the first time since the Northern Michigan game at the very start of the season, Michigan blew out its lesser opponent from start to finish.  Unlike some of the so-called cupcake games where Michigan struggled mightily before eventually pulling away, last night’s game against Coppin State was never really close.  Michigan started to pull away from the start of the game and ended up winning 76-46.

The best part about last night’s game was the fact that Stu Douglass seemed to finally find his shooting touch again.  He went 6-10 from three-point land and led all Michigan scorers with 20 points.  DeShawn Sims had the second-most points, scoring 18.  Two of Michigan’s other starters, Zack Novak and Laval Lucas-Perry, also scored a double-digit amount of points.  Novak had 11 and LLP ended up with 10.  Actually, the one starter who didn’t score in double digits was Manny Harris, who only had 5 points.  Such a performance is rare for Manny, but he basically let his teammates take care of the opponent for a change and worried more about distributing the ball, which is why he had more assists (7) than points.  Michigan’s bench produced four scorers last night.  Matt Vogrich’s 6 points were the most of any bench player, as he went 2-4 from behind the arc.  The rest of the scorers, Darius Morris, Anthony Wright, and Zack Gibson, each had 2 points.

Shooting-wise, Michigan was better than usual, going 11-33 (33.3%) from three-point land and 30-61 (49.2%) from the field.  Stu’s great performance played a large role in Michigan’s improved numbers, as there were still some struggles in general (namely Novak, who went 4-12 from the field and 1-7 from three-point land).  Even so, at least one of Michigan’s usual three-point shooters got it going for a change.  Who knows if Stu has his shot back or not, but last night’s game was certainly encouraging.

Michigan will get more than a week off before it travels to Bloomington to play Indiana on New Year’s Eve.  That game tips off at noon ET and can be seen on ESPN2.
