Michigan Struggles Against Marquette, Loses 79-65

Michigan didn’t look all that great against Creighton yesterday, but today was by far the worst game of the season for the Wolverines.  Marquette gave Michigan problems all game long on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball en route to a 79-65 victory.  Michigan was just off and although it made a big run in the second half to cut the lead down to 1, Marquette followed that up with a run of its own to make it a double-digit game yet again.

Marquette doesn’t have much size, but it made up for that with its quickness.  Michigan’s defense looked lost at times, allowing Marquette to drive into the paint and score or kick it out and nail three-pointers.  It didn’t help that Marquette was shooting the ball extremely well, going 52.8% from the field.  Michigan, on the other hand, struggled mightily on offense for a good part of the game, especially from beyond the arc.  Anytime Michigan goes cold from three-point land it is going to be a rough game, and considering it went 3-20 today, the final score isn’t too surprising.

Aside from the poor three-point shooting, the biggest problem on offense was that only two players scored in double digits.  Manny Harris scored 22 points and was just about the only player who could score on a consistent basis in the second half.  Laval Lucas-Perry was the other player who scored in double digits, ending up with 12 for the game.  Zack Gibson did play quite well off the bench, but it was a struggle for the rest of the team.  Stu Douglass, for example, really played poorly, going 0-5 from beyond the arc and just didn’t play well in general.

The loss to Marquette means Michigan will not play for the Old Spice Classic title on Sunday.  Instead it will play the loser of the Florida State-Alabama game, which takes place later today.  Michigan’s game on Sunday can be seen on ESPNU at 5 p.m.

UPDATE: Alabama lost to Florida State 60-51, so Michigan will play the Crimson Tide on Sunday.
