Friday Quick Hits: All Big Ten ADs Approved Indiana Game at FedEx Field
- Vince Helmuth, who left the team earlier this summer, is going to transfer to Miami (Ohio).
- Lloyd Carr is going to campaign for Jay Riemersma, who is running for Congress.
- The Pac-10 has proposed that teams should no longer be allowed to stay in hotels the night before home games as a way to cut costs. The proposal will be voted on in January at the NCAA convention, and you can already pencil in a “no” vote for Rich Rodriguez, who is against the idea. I am against it as well, because I don’t see the reason why teams should be banned from staying in a hotel. If a team wants to cut costs and not stay in a hotel, that should be their choice. At the same time, if they want to stay in a hotel, that also should be their choice. To prohibit everyone just seems unnecessary, as each team’s financial situation is different. Some teams can obviously afford it, and it’s not like staying in a hotel will give teams an unfair competitive advantage on the field. Staying in a hotel gives the coaches more control over what the players do the night before a game, but that isn’t an unfair advantage by any means.
- All Big Ten athletic directors approved Indiana’s decision to move its home game against Penn State next year to FedEx Field. That seemed a bit strange since it basically gave Penn State another home game, but like everything else, it all boiled down to money.
“With our revenue sharing, the Big Ten is going to make more money off this game than they would have in Bloomington, Indiana,” Glass said. “They’re going to have a chance to have a high-profile game on the Eastern side of our boundary, which I think is a good thing, and show the Big Ten flag to recruits and others. I think it’s a win-win all around.
I don’t know how much the conference and its other nine teams will make off this, but it can’t be a ton of money, at least not enough where I would have voted to approve the game. In the end, though, the athletic directors were more worried about money than the competitive edge this gives Penn State.
- Tim and Paul of mgoblog checked out Jerald Robinson’s game last night.
