Monday Quick Hits: Old Press Box to Come Down After OSU Game
- Jordan Morgan’s surgery went well.
- MGoBlue has some new pictures of Michigan Stadium. The renovation is moving right along and the brick facade is really looking good. In the caption of one picture, it was mentioned that the old press box will be demolished in November 2009, meaning it will come down right after the Ohio State game.
- You can pretty much completely squash the Michigan-Georgia rumor.
“There’s no truth to it,” a Michigan athletic department spokesman said Thursday.
What an AD spokesman says obviously isn’t the end-all, be-all for a rumor, but future schedules made the matchup unlikely anyways, so I don’t doubt that this rumor was nothing more than a rumor.
- The Free Press has more on the M-Den no longer being partnered with U-M.
- The Sporting News’ latest 2010 mock draft has Brandon Graham going to the Chiefs with the No. 3 overall pick. If he has a good enough season to put him in the top five of next year’s draft, I don’t think Michigan will have a record of 3-9 again.
- Pat Forde came up with a list of ten “rivalries” for the 2009-10 basketball season that are “red-hot.” Don’t take the word “rivalries” too seriously, though, as No. 10 on the list is Michigan and Purdue. That’s right, all because of Manny Harris’ inadvertent elbow, the Michigan-Purdue matchup has become one of the top ten rivalries in college basketball. If you need further proof that the list is questionable, Forde has Kentucky-Louisville at No. 1. Considering Forde was a sportswriter in Louisville before moving to ESPN and has strong ties to the area, I think some homerism helped determine which rivalry was at the top of his list.
- Maize n Brew explored the possibility of adding something like the Godzillatron to Michigan Stadium. I don’t know if we need a video board quite that big, but the current ones do need to be replaced, specifically with something that has a bigger, HD screen.
- There is a warrant out for Chris Perry due to his failure to pay back-taxes in the city of Wyoming, Ohio.

About demolishing the press box, maybe I’m crazy and I know it’s old and rickety, but it is sort of an important Michigan relic. Instead of demolishing it, is there some other way to keep it or make use of it either as a museum piece or something else that’s functional, like a mini diner where visitors can eat breakfast in Bob Ufer’s chair or defensive coordinator Lloyd Carr’s old seat, for example. Maybe it’s just impossible (or too expensive) to take a crane and lift that thing out without destroying it anyway.
That would be sweet if they could do something like that, but I think in this case “demolish” means take it down piece by piece. I could be wrong, but based on how close the old and new press boxes are, it seems like the only way to get the old one out of there is meticulously. A good way to make some extra money would be to sell things from it. I could see that generating revenue.
At least use the 50′s style ” Michigan Stadium” sign from the old press box and maybe put it somewhere like main entrance or something.
