Thursday Quick Hits: The Latest on Greg Paulus

  • Greg Paulus is going to hold a press conference at 10 a.m. this morning to update everyone on what is going on with him right now. His father said that “several pro teams” are interested in his son, and additional workouts are being set up. That leads me to believe this press conference will be nothing more than Paulus telling us what we already know — that he is considering pursuing a career in football and is keeping his options open. If he is busy setting up workouts with pro teams, then it is obvious he wants to get an idea of what NFL teams think about him before making any decision. I’m assuming they will tell him he isn’t ready for the NFL just yet, so another year of college is probably the likely end result.
  • Even if Paulus ends up coming to Michigan, I highly, highly doubt he would ever see the field unless it was because of injuries. Think of it like this: Paulus would be on a level lower than a true freshman if he transferred to another college to play football. He hasn’t even played football in four years and would have to learn the offense of his new team. Tate Forcier and Nick Sheridan would be way ahead of him, and I would even think Denard Robinson would have an edge based on the fact that he hasn’t gone without playing football for such an extended period of time. If Paulus got back to the level of talent he had in high school, then he would still have to overcome quite a bit to even challenge for playing time.

Despite the fact that Paulus would have a ton of work to do, there is absolutely no reason for Michigan not to take him if he wants to come here. Chances are he would do nothing more than provide extra depth, and that isn’t a bad thing considering David Cone was Michigan’s backup this spring. Nick Sheridan will likely occupy that role heading into summer workouts, and I would imagine Denard Robinson will round out the top three at QB, at least initially. If Paulus ever saw the field, it would probably be because of an injury to one of Michigan’s top guys. If it wasn’t for injury reasons, then Paulus would be at a level far higher than I could have ever imagined, as it would take a lot to beat out Tate Forcier. Regardless, adding extra depth is never a bad thing, and he would only be on scholarship for a year anyways.

  • Duke coach David Cutcliffe was willing to let Greg Paulus try out for his team, but only at wide receiver and not quarterback. Cutcliffe didn’t feel like Paulus could realistically compete for playing time since he has been away from the game and because Duke runs a pro-style offense. The spread is a better fit for Paulus, according to Cutcliffe, which is probably why Michigan is an enticing situation to the former Duke point guard.
  • One of the weirder things with this whole Greg Paulus story was what happened on the Free Press’ website Wednesday morning. When I got up and checked for the latest news, I went to a Free Press story that had been updated to say FOXSports.com’s report was an April Fools joke. I immediately wondered what the hell they were talking about, as the report had been backed up by multiple news outlets and multiple people. Paulus had even been spotted in Ann Arbor for crying out loud, so it would later make sense that the Free Press’ story was re-updated soon after to say that the original report from FOXSports.com was true. They first apologized for reporting something they thought turned out to be a joke and then apologized again for apologizing the first time.

The link to that story now takes you to an entirely new article written by someone else. No apologies are mentioned, as the Free Press obviously wants to wash away the egg on their face. I just don’t get how they could be so gullible. Why would someone try to pull off an April Fools joke two weeks after April 1? What’s more, why would someone want to make the joke about Greg Paulus checking out a Michigan practice? Silly Free Press.

  • One thing in this whole situation is certain: Tate Forcier doesn’t give a damn about Greg Paulus, or anyone at the QB position for that matter. Jason Forcier relayed this funny quote to ESPN that shows how much confidence Tate has: “Tate is not worried about it all. Colt McCoy can be transferring into Michigan and it wouldn’t faze Tate one bit. He is one of the most competitive kids I know.”
  • The Big Ten’s primetime schedule was released yesterday, and it has been confirmed that Michigan’s game at Iowa will be played at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN or ABC.
  • MVictors interviewed Vince Helmuth.
  • John Beilein is on a boat
  • Unfortunately, World Cup games aren’t coming to the Big House. (HT: MGoBlog)
  • Erin Andrews is going to be in NCAA Football 10.

Just don’t get this hype about Greg Paulus…..even back in 04 the consensus was that he was a kid playing in a poor football league and hence ran up the numbers. He was like a fish out of the water in the 05 Army AA game, okay that was just a game but everybody who saw him during the practice week commented that he was better suited as a PG, and he made the right choice.

Even discounting that this kid hasn’t f%ckign played football in like 5 years, WTF, is he really that better that Furrha kid, plus he gives just a year. I mean if you wan to show that you have bodies at Qb then its fine, but that’s about it.

Agree, much to do about nothing. If he even hit’s the field during a game next year they are in real trouble.
