Greg Paulus Visits Michigan, Considering Transferring?
Greg Paulus, best known for being a Duke point guard the last four years, is out of eligibility for basketball. He was probably going to try to pursue a future with that sport, but his plans may be changing. Paulus worked out for the Packers last week after Green Bay contacted him out of the blue. Many other NFL teams are interested in him, and so are some colleges, Michigan being one of them.
Paulus was a great quarterback recruit coming out of high school. He was the Gatorade National Player of the Year and could have played QB for a high-profile college. In the end, however, he decided to play basketball at Duke and hasn’t played football since his high school days. Even so, teams — both pro and college — are showing interest in him with the hope that he will be able to shake off the rust rather quickly. It is worth looking into, and Michigan obviously has done so.
Paulus attended Michigan’s last practice of the spring on Tuesday, and the impression I got from FOXSports.com’s story about him is that he is intrigued. There’s no guarantee that he would be anywhere near the level he was coming out of high school, but there’s no point not to take a chance on him. He still has a year of eligibility left for football, and if he transferred to Michigan, he probably would have a shot at making a run at the starting job. Again, there’s no telling if he would be any good, but why not take a chance? The worst case scenario is that he takes up a spot on the roster and is nothing more than depth. On the other hand, the best case scenario is that he turns out to be a good player and at the very least challenges for the starting job.
Between this and the news that Jason Forcier is hoping to return to Michigan for grad school and possibly rejoin the team (based on what the NCAA has to say about it), the Wolverines’ QB situation could be upgraded quite a bit in the coming weeks.
