UPDATE: Apparently Gardner is going to wait to announce until a later date. I don’t believe that this is bad news for Michigan; it’s just means we will have to wait for his commitment to become official.

Inkster quarterback Devin Gardner is set to commit to Michigan in the coming days to become the fourth member of Michigan’s 2010 recruiting class. Gardner is one of the top players in the state of Michigan and was at the very top of U-M’s priority list for quarterbacks. He is the perfect fit for the spread offense, as he has great running abilities and great potential as a passer. He is definitely raw and needs work with his passing mechanics, but hey, whatever gets the job done is fine by me.

Gardner is a 4-star on both Rivals and Scout and is on the top 150 watch list on ESPN. In Rivals’ recently released top 250, he checked in at #177. That is lower than I expected, but then again, the rankings don’t mean much until these recruits play their senior seasons. On top of that, Gardner has lots of talent already and still has lots of potential as well. That combination means that a great senior season could bump him up quite a bit in the rankings.

Cameron Gordon, a class of 2009 wide receiver, was Devin Gardner’s teammate at Inkster. I’m sure that only helped Michigan’s chances of landing Gardner, though there were obviously many other factors at play. One of those factors is likely playing time. If things work out well with Tate Forcier and/or Denard Robinson, then Gardner could ideally come to Michigan, redshirt, and have two full seasons left after the current freshmen are gone. Obviously that is quite a ways down the road, but that is the ideal scenario.
