Wednesday Quick Hits: Michigan Beats Michigan Tech 77-55
- Michigan beat Michigan Tech last night 77-55. The Wolverines were led by Manny Harris, who scored a career-high 30 points and helped Michigan pull away in the first half. Michigan Tech did cut the lead down to 10 points in the second half, but Michigan turned up its game and went on a scoring run to again make this a blowout.
- Michigan will play Northeastern tonight at 8 p.m. on ESPNU, and the winner of the game will move on to Madison Square Garden next week. The likely opponent in NYC is UCLA, but let’s worry about that if U-M gets by Northeastern, which will not be an easy task. Northeastern, who beat IUPUI 73-60 yesterday, is going to provide a tough test for the Wolverines, so it’ll be interesting to see how Michigan plays against a non-GLIAC school.
- Steven Threet practiced yesterday, but the same can’t be said for Brandon Minor. Minor did not practice, and it seems like he will probably miss Saturday’s game against Northwestern.
- Michigan’s defensive line is apparently responsible for the switch back to a four-man front. They told the coaches what they felt more comfortable with, and the coaches obviously listened.
- Back in 2000 when Rich Rodriguez was at Clemson, Northwestern’s head coach, Randy Walker, and offensive coordinator, Kevin Wilson, spent a week learning the spread and implemented a carbon copy of what Clemson was running. It obviously isn’t the exact same offense anymore, but that is an interesting story nonetheless.
- Will Campbell is planning on announcing his college decision at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on January 3, and he also is going to graduate in December. That means Campbell has to wrap up his recruitment in the next month and a half or so, as I imagine he will need to register for classes and everything like that before he actually makes his decision public. There may be exceptions for early enrollees, but for Michigan, at least, class registration for the winter semester starts later this month.
- Mark Mitera, who was injured at the start of Michigan’s hockey season, had surgery last week and is out 3-6 months. Although there might be a chance that Mitera could return near the end of the season, I wouldn’t expect to see him back.

I go to USF here in Tampa, FL and I registered for spring classes last week. We need an insider at the UM academics office, or some sort of leak from the registrars office. Hoping for the best.
Go Blue!
I imagine incoming freshman in the winter quarter register the same time as mid year transfer students: the day before the semester. Of course, you do need to let them know you are coming before that and pay a deposit, but you can’t register for classes until then.
I think it’s very commendable that the coaches listened–and took to heart–the opinions of the defense when they requested switching to a four-man front. Reveals a great deal of respect, not only of players for coaches–which is expected, but of coaches for the players, which is nice to see. Shows the coaches are secure enough in their abilities and their authority to remain open-minded and are smart to know they can always learn more, smart enough to know that knowledge can also flow UP from the trenches.
(Goes to show you that Boren was premature in his comments about the coaching staff, or full of bovine excrement–probably both!)
