  • The basketball team plays Saginaw Valley State in an exhibition game tonight at 7 p.m. ET. The Big Ten Network will be streaming the game on their website, giving all fans a chance to get an early look at the 2008-09 Wolverines.
  • Never in my life did I ever expect to utter this phrase: “I can’t wait for basketball season.” With the football team being as bad as it is, the natural thing to do was to start looking ahead to basketball season. Obviously that’s never usually a good thing to do if you’re a Michigan fan, but hear me out. The basketball team is expected to be much improved from last season, and with John Beilein now in his second year as head coach, the expectation is that this team will take a big step forward in the rebuilding process. Besides , they can’t be any worse than a 2-win football team, right? (I sure as hell hope not.)
  • My prediction for the basketball team is that they will hover around .500 once Big Ten play begins and will ultimately end up finishing with a record around 15-15 in the regular season. That would be good enough for an NIT bid, which would actually mark a successful season.
  • Prior to last season, my belief was that rebuilding the basketball program would be a three-year process. Year 1 wasn’t expected to be pretty, and we all saw that it wasn’t. Year 2, on the other hand, is seen as a season where the team can be decent enough to make the NIT. By the third year, though, an NCAA tournament bid should be the goal for sure. After two seasons with Beilein and with a solid recruiting class coming in, the team should be good enough to make a run at the tournament.
  • Switching gears to football, this week’s BlogPoll is out, and much to my surprise, I wasn’t in the top five for the Mr. Numb Existence Award.
