Boy oh Boy it must be tough to be a Michigan fan this year…
How can a third string QB torch a definse returning 8 starters?
I plan on giving Rich Rod at least 3 years to get his players in his system. If we stink after that I say get a new coach. To be fair we should also give Coach Shafer a couple of years. If Rich Rod fires Shafer this year wouldn’t that be a bit hypocritical. If so I say we fire the whole outfit. Keep up the good work!!
I agree 100%.
No. It is not the same thing as RR. While it may seem drastic to fire a coach after 1 year, he had all of the players he needed to be successful. Whether it is because the players didn’t buy into his scheme or maybe it is like Tony Franklin at Auburn where the coaches didn’t buy into his scheme, it is still terrible. I feel as though if you are not going to give the DC full reign over the defense, then fire him for someone you trust. If he players can see that the DC doesn’t have full power then they will not give him the respect he deserves.
As a group I would say this defense isn’t very bright. Whenever I listen to the radio broadcast, it seems like Brandy is always pointing out how players are (seemingly) always out of position. Like the poor tackling, this has been a problem for a while now. Maybe the only way it will get fixed is when Lloyd’s recruits start petering out on defense. BTW was I the only one screaming at the TV, pleading for RR to get out of that damn 3-3-5 defense. It seemed like Purdue figured it our yet RR or Shaffer seemed determined as hell to run it, which makes me think RR has pretty much given up on this season and is using it for practice for next year.
To give up 48 points to a 3rd string q.b. is rediculus. Defense was going to be are strong point this year. We did’nt stop shit. Secondary sucks. I just hope we can beat Ohio State, then this year wont be a complet waste.
on another note, did you guys here that RR used feagin today? I think it was on the punts where he used him.
FireScottShafer.com is up
I can not believe that nobody has requested the firing of RR. Give me a break!!!!! OMG, he has just ruined a 33 year record to bowl games and nobody seems to care. OK, but lets get rid of Carr who had one of the highest winning percentages in college football. App State was such a big deal when we lost to them. Ok, I word: TOLEDO. Give him time everyone says. How much worse can it get. Doesn’t anyone understand that MICHIGAN has been so good because of our 33 straight bowl appearances. Look, each losing season brings a bad recruiting year. What are we going to do get more rookies. I am truely disappointed IN RR and I am shocked others aren’t
But..but …we don’t have talent on D. Our LBs and S suck and no amount of coaching is gonna fix that. Our current players are junk…they have no will to fight….they have bad fundamentals..they are selfish and try to make all the tackles by themselves while completely ignoring the concept of “team Defense” and player responsibilities…..we are not strong in the middle (again poor LBs and S) so no DC can fix that!!
These are a few of the stuff that’s been put out by the pro-Shafer crowd… Now some of it is true..our Lbs and S don’t seem to play good football..period, but to transfer the blame entirely on them is BS. And how in the world is Butler getting playing time just having moved to DL a couple of weeks back….truly astonishing!! I think we need a review on D and see if anything can be salvaged, cause next year we lose our so-called strength, the DL, as three starters graduate with a possibility of BG coming out a year early!!
I am an Ohio State fan and I just have to say that as much as I want your team to lose, this season is just getting painful. Please, win some more so “The Game” isn’t a laugh riot. Thanks.
Whats more funny?
1. A 2-10 season…
2. A Heisman hopeful who just won a BCS title driving around with a bunch of “gats” hopped up on crack?
Don’t worry TOSU fans. We will be back to restore all of your fears in the next few years.
12 freshman playing and people are complaining?
Forget the 33 bowl-game record. What has that done for the future of Michigan football? What Coach Rod is doing is trying to bring Michigan football into the 21st century. It’s SUPPOSED to hurt. It’s like being married to some big fat michigan state pig who can’t stop picking the mole on the end of her fat nose.
Dumping her to the curb will hurt – especially in court. But get rid of her, give yourself a few years to find the hottie (you might have to leave the mid west) and you’ll be good to go.
Everyone who wants Coach Rod fired or is looking for drastic changes is just fooling themselves. Coach Rod is one of the best football coaches in the nation, but he inherited a completely depleted roster. You HAVE to give him 3 years…to recruit, to teach, to make sure kids buy in…but most importantly to turn the ship around 180 degrees from the henne/hart/carr drop back pass that allows UM to finish in the top 15, but rarely in the top 5. If you can’t see how successful the spread offense is in college football today, you may need to take the blinders off. Running the “pro” offense isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…just ask Charlie “The Whale” Weiss and his latest prodigy Jimmy “Hook Nose” Clauson. I’ll take the spread anyday – aspecially when we’re top 5 year in and year out and regularly competing for a national title. Patience, young Jedi…
I agree with “10:30AM”……What do you expect Rodriguez to do? Umm, prior to this season, the last time his QBs really played was in high school, years ago. We lost a lot of offensive talent to the NFL and a few transfers. The O line is completely depleted, not to mention hurt by injuries. Most of the offense is essentially freshmen, with no college experience, trying to learn an offense the thickness of a telephone book. I am surprised that they can actually score points. There are some future stars on the offense for sure…Odoms, McGuffie, Koger….just to name a few.
As for the D, well, hhmm….secondary stinks…Other than Cissoko and Warren, it is sub-par. Morgan Trent was always overrated in my opinion, the safeties…eeehhhh
….linebackers…eehhh. The only decent part of the secondary is the line, which to their credit, has been playing ok, not great, but ok. Definitely not up to their hype…but again, ok.
Ok, coaching has something to do with it, I mean…you are supposed to make adjustments, and mold the O/D to your players’ abilities, but as some posters said, we just don’t have the goods to perform at a college level. RR has cut down his playbook significantly, made adjustments (changing the depth chart, schemes), but it hasn’t worked too well. The players simply are just not there. The players that are on the team are average/sub-average.
I was at the game and while we were leaving the stadium, I saw Schafer walking by himself with his suit and briefcase getting on the bus. Not more than 10-15 minutes after the last play. What do you make of that?
Complaining about the O seems a little silly considering all the changes in schemes and personnel etc….and they have showed signs of improvement, culminating with a solid 35 (we had a score on a punt return) point performance against a mediocre D, but still 35 is 35.
But he D had 8 kids coming back, very good DL, good CBs, and some promise and talent at LB and S. But the LBs and S have sucked and CB play has been merely average. But the D has shown no signs of improvement, in fact it has regressed. At first it was Brown sucking at Safety, but now Harrison has started to stake a claim as the worst safety on the team, Trent and Warren have regressed. And for all the slobbering over Cissoko’s schlong, he was directly responsible for 3 big plays against MSU!!!
We had a chance to shut down a poor offense, with a half decent receiver in Orton and a RB in Sheets, starting a Qb who is a Rfrosh and who was third string until the back up got injured and who was practicing as a RB three weeks ago, to complete cream us. Even if you take away that fake Punt and our muffed punt they put up 35 points, and easily so. Something has to give.
Shafer needs to produce as he might not get the same leeway that RR gets.
The red flag on Schafer for me is that RichRod stepped in and changed the D this week to the stack. Now, it obviously didn’t work, with 48 points on the board, but they had only 4 practices to get it up and running. Schafer has been scrapping all season with schemes, etc. We knew there were holes in the O, but the D should have been somewhat stable. I truly think that he may gone this week – if RR has a replacement on staff that he can use.
Yeah that bit if news was startling, this seems to be going the Auburn-Tony Franklin way, if these reports are true. We either have to have complete trust on Shafer and give him next year too or else we shit can him and get a stud DC and let him choose his assistants. That again was a problem because Rod brought along some of his cronies and got Hopson and Shafer from outside. Now the staff has never worked with Shafer’s schemes, so getting on the same page seems to be a problem i have to guess.
We cannot promote someone form within if we can Shafer, we need to make the best hire. Hire away Tenuta, Mattison or Mike Stoops(if he is fired from Arizona).
The “D has played poorly – no doubt about it. But they’ve been on the field the entire game!!! I’d love to know where UM’s defense ranks in the D1 for minutes played. I bet they’re right up near the top. When the offense scores, we tend to score quick. More often than not, we don’t score. we don’t get very many 1st downs either. So you have to feel for our defense because they’re constantly on the field working their tails off.
Once the offense comes around, the defense will be better rested and we can hope for better things then.
But that’s probably 2 years from now considering our absolute lack of depth.
The season won’t be “lost” unless we lose to Ohio State Junior College.
Being on the field for a long period of time is no excuse for not even coming close to covering receivers or being out of position all the time.
One telling thing has been watching Cissoko. In the last game for his first few def series, he alone was playing press coverage on his guy and doing a nice job. In this game, he's giving his guy a 10yd cushion on the LOS, even on 3rd & short.
What is Shafer doing? The one thing our db's have is speed. Play press man coverage, less confusing, and you can play aggressive. Clearly, playing a soft zone, does nothing but give the other team a 1 down or 6.
Yes, our L'backers and db's are disappointing, but our coaching strategies and gameplanning are beyond disappointing, but head scratching.
Why is it that Lloyd Carr is not receiving more blame for leaving the “cupboards bare”? I know that several players left the team (Mallett, Boren, etc.) but there is so little depth in almost every position. I would think that recruiting has to be a job that few coaches enjoy. If Carr knew that he was retiring soon, was he putting in a strong effort to continue recruiting for the future or was he only putting in a partial effort?
While I can’t disagree that their is a definite lack of depth at many positions, that is not an excuse on defense as far as I’m concerned. On offense I can understand why they have struggled (lack of experience and the new system), but defensively their struggles are mind boggling.
I hear that insiders/alums are working on getting Martin & RR fired as a package…this from an alumnus player circa 1980….anyone else heard this?
