Michigan pitcher/DH Zach Putnam has signed with the Cleveland Indians, ending his Wolverines baseball career.

Zach Putnam is skipping his senior season at Michigan to sign with the Cleveland Indians, a franchise with a great reputation for drafting and developing major leaguers.

The right-hander signed a minor league deal worth about $650,000 Thursday night.

“It’s exciting to be part of a club that is known for its homegrown stars,” Putnam said. “It gives me a lot of confidence that they want me and it’s comforting to know I’m with them.”

Putnam is a great player and losing him hurts. The MLB has taken quite a bit of talent off the Michigan roster this summer, but that just shows the strength of the program Rich Maloney has built.
