Tuesday Quick Hits: Bill Martin Wins Sailing National Championship
Joe Tiller did some backtracking at the Big Ten media days last week as he tried to make it sound like he never directly criticized Rich Rodriguez back on signing day. Tiller is correct in saying that he didn’t actually reference Rodriguez or Michigan, but does he really think we are that dumb?
The part of the article that contained his infamous “a guy in a wizard hat selling snake oil” phrase was about Roy Roundtree’s decision to switch his commitment from Purdue to Michigan. Tiller can act like he was just talking about recruiting in general, but I’d love to hear his explanation for going after Roundtree and his school.
I will give Tiller credit for admitting that a gentleman’s agreement doesn’t really exist and that last minute switches in recruiting do happen and have helped him in the past. It seems like Tiller’s comments were made out of frustration, so maybe I’m being too hard on the guy. After all, he gave us the image of Rich Rodriguez wearing a wizard hat while selling snake oil, and for that, I thank him.
- Michigan athletic director Bill Martin is an avid sailor, as we all found out during the coaching search. I just never realized how avid he is as Martin won a national championship in some sailing event recently. (HT: MGoBlog)
- Via Varsity Blue, MGoBlue has posted its first weekly release for the Michigan football team. The release includes lots of stats and facts as well as a depth chart from the end of spring practice. That depth chart will likely change quite a bit before the season starts, but it is something to go off of, at least until fall practice begins on August 4.
- ESPN named Valdosta, Georgia, TitleTown USA. Seriously.
I knew Ann Arbor wasn’t going to win, but I am very surprised that Valdosta was given the title. I guess it’s better than Boston winning something again, but it still is surprising.
- Michigan’s hockey alumni reunion will take place this Friday.
- The M-Den’s website has finally been redone. It is much easier to navigate now and is much more user friendly.

2 a.m. quickhits have gotten me through so many sleepless nights.
If you don’t know anything about Valdosta, they were (are? haven’t kept up lately) THE powerhouse football program in the south and perennially in the top 5 nationally, with several prep national titles. I believe they are the Michigan of high school football (ie, winningest program in the country). In short, this town literally breathes high school football. Friday Night Lights? Texas? Yeah, big stuff, but it started in a little town in rural south Georgia.
Bill Martin (Ann Arbor, MI) steered his Great Lakes 70 Stripes to three first place finishes in three races in IRC Class 1 on Sunday to grab first place in the Rolex US-IRC National Championship. Martin wins the second annual championship trophy and much more, a specially engraved Rolex Steel and Platinum Yacht-Master timepiece.
