  • According to an infrastructure report, renovating Crisler Arena could cost more than $46.7 million and building a practice facility would be around $20.5 million. The hopeful plan is to have both projects finished at the same time, but I’m not exactly sure that will happen. Work on Crisler Arena isn’t expected to begin until Michigan Stadium’s renovation is complete, and that isn’t scheduled happen until the summer of 2010. 2010 has been thrown out there before as a potential completion date for a new practice facility as well, which seems to have priority over Crisler Arena.

As far as funding goes for the practice facility, so far not so good. Bill Martin has said that he is willing to incur a debt to make a practice facility a reality, and it appears as though he will have to do just that. Eric Lacy obtained documents detailing funding for a practice facility, and as of right now donations total just over $1.5 million. Obviously that’s not a whole lot when Michigan is looking at spending around $20 million. It doesn’t mean a practice facility won’t be built, but it does mean that Michigan will have to find other ways to fund this if donors don’t step it up.
