Friday Quick Hits: Barwis Goes on WTKA

  • Michigan strength and conditioning coach and urban legend Mike Barwis went on WTKA earlier this week, and I don’t even know what to say about the interview. Barwis has become an urban legend on Michigan message boards and in Ann Arbor thanks to his intensity and aggressive attitude, and he has actually turned into a Chuck Norris-like figure in a sense. I’m not exactly sure how the whole thing about Barwis got started, but I certainly can see why it did.

During the interview, Barwis talked about his pets. Now, a normal person would have a pet dog or cat or something like that, but not Mike Barwis. He had pet wolves and a dog-like animal from Spain that was bred to hunt lions. Seriously. Barwis also touched on how he once drove off a cliff and still made it to practice and then also discussed a ridiculous journey to West Virginia and back to move some things to Ann Arbor. The journey included being in a snowstorm, lifting a trailer back onto the road, and getting to practice only 30 seconds late after hurting his back and having only one functional leg. Folks, Mike Barwis truly is an urban legend.

  • Michigan shortstop Jason Christian was drafted 154th overall by the Oakland Athletics and pitcher Zach Putnam was picked 171st overall by the Cleveland Indians. I’d be surprised if Putnam, who pitches and bats for Michigan, comes back for his senior year. It’s still a possibility, but when the next step in your career awaits, it’s hard not to move on.

  1. Andrew says:

not really a “Michigan” quick hit, but saw today that WVU’s president resigned over an academic fraud case. While he was not implicated, some people working for him decided it would be a good idea to add courses and grades to the transcript of someone who claimed to have received an MBA from WVU in 1998. She did not, in fact, complete her coursework and was never offered the degree. Who is the woman who falsely claimed the degree? Why, none other than the GOVERNOR’S DAUGHTER.

  2. Andrew says:

Putnam is NOT going to the indians b/c he is unsignable. I’m guessing this is b/c he has been previously drafted, so look for him to come back and have an even better year in 2009. By the way he was drafted out of high school by Detroit in the 17th round.

  3. Hal says:

    Barwus is my hero!!!

  4. Jivas says:

Let’s just get this one thing straight right now: Mike Barwis would kick Chuck Norris’s ass.

  5. Dan says:

Putnam was actually drafted out of high school in the 38th round by the Tigers. He was considered a 1st/2nd round pick at that time too but dropped considerably after saying that he wanted to play for Michigan and that it would take a substantial contract for him to feel otherwise. He’s no fool and is not unsignable, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he returns for his Senior year because he feels slighted by this draft.

  6. Anonymous says:

What is with his gravel voice? Does he smoke a carton of ‘boro’s a day?

  7. Reed says:

Those pets are all pretty cool, but I still don’t think they could take a fuck lion.

  8. Anonymous says:

Lol, I bet Barwis would have a fuck lion if he could.
