Wednesday Quick Hits: Jake Long Is a Rich Man
- Jake Long has officially signed with the Miami Dolphins, meaning on Saturday he will be the #1 overall pick of the 2008 NFL Draft. Even better yet, Long’s contract with Miami is worth $57.75 million over 5 years and includes $30 million of guaranteed money.
- A few of you asked yesterday if this was the first time a Michigan player has been drafted #1 overall, and actually, it’s not. Way back in 1941, Heisman Trophy winner Tom Harmon was picked 1st overall by the Chicago Bears, so Long is the second Wolverine to be off the board before anyone else.
- The Big Ten Network did a story on Jim Abbott, and it can be seen below.

MGoBlog posted a screen cap of dual-threat quarterback Kevin Newsome’s MySpace page yesterday, and the picture told us that he has an interesting taste in music or is trying to hint at something. I’m hoping it’s the latter as his profile’s song currently is “I’m Blue.” Again, I don’t know if he’s trying to hint at something or not, but checking his page today revealed something even more interesting. Fellow 2009 quarterback Tate Forcier (brother of Jason), who also has a Michigan offer, left a comment on Newsome’s profile that really would be great for Michigan if what he talked about actually happens.
Aye bro! How sick would it be if we both went to Michigan? We could do like the florida thing with tebow an Chris Leak… Cuz dude if we both go there we could do some serious damage. An we could get like the Tightest WR’s
It seems like it’s only a matter of time until Newsome makes a public decision, and if he does anytime soon it will likely be for Michigan. Receiving a verbal would be huge as he is a highly rated dual-threat QB, which is something that Michigan desperately needs in the future. As far as Tate Forcier goes, if he were to also commit to Michigan, I would be ecstatic. It would be shocking if both ended up in Ann Arbor, but they do seem to be pretty good friends, so maybe Newsome committing would put Tate over the edge as well.

Larry Wright, a now former St. John’s basketball player, has decided to transfer, and Michigan could be his next destination. It is way too early to tell which schools he is seriously considering, but we do know that Michigan is at least in the discussion.

The blue reference made by Newsome could mean PSU or NC or even UConn, in addition to UM. (All the schools mentioned above have offered per Rivals.)
Sean, do you have any info that points to Newsome or Forcier committing to us soon, or is your prediction an educated guess? I just do not want to get my hopes up again like I did with Pryor.
Any blue reference that would be hinting at something would definitely be referring to Michigan. He visited on the 12th and met with two Michigan coaches on Monday, so it seems like good news could be coming.
For Tate, I have no idea when he’ll make a decision, but my guess is not until the summer sometime after he takes visits.
Cool! Thanks Sean! Newsome would be quite a get at #39 in the nation!!
Anonymous,
Beyond the “i’m blue” reference, Newsome can be seen sporting a wolverines sweatshirt as his profile pic.
