Michigan Takes Two Steps Back in Loss to Northwestern

Well, I guess the winning ways of the Michigan basketball team were just too good to be true. After winning 4 out of its last 5, Michigan came up short against Northwestern last night in a 62-60 loss to the Wildcats. Normally a loss here or there isn’t a huge deal, especially for Michigan, but getting beat by Northwestern is a good way to destroy any momentum that was built up for the stretch run. The reason for that is because this was Northwestern’s first Big Ten win of the season and first in over a year. To lose to a team like that is simply pathetic.

One positive from this game for me was that I had my first Big Ten Network experience. I finally got to watch the BTN, which is great because I got to see Michigan play. The only problem, though, was that I only saw one half of action. Between the crappy game itself and the horrible announcers (I’m looking at you, Gene Keady), I actually fell asleep right before the second half started, so all I saw was the Wildcats dominate Michigan for 20 minutes and that was it. In the second half Michigan obviously made a comeback, but that’s all that I can tell you.

Since I really don’t have much to say about this game, check out these highlights from the BTN for a better recap:

You are over exaggerating this lose. Why be shocked at this lose?

Lets look at each team 2 games leading up to this…

Michigan lost to @ Minnesota, and barely beat a pathetic Illini team at home.

While, Northwestern has lost its last two games by a total of 5 points. Losing @ Iowa and and almost upset Indiana.

NW was clearly on the rise, while Michigan was clearly in a downturn.

As much as I didn’t want to be the team to give NW their first win since 1854 (was that it?)…the writing was on the wall.

Yeah, that one showed we still have a lot of work to do. As did the Illinois game. I watched the Ill game and it was a poorly played game. I’m sure the NW game was too. Still, there has been a lot of improvement in the last season. I dare say if this team starts the season over, we’re in the NIT and we don’t lose to Harvard. No, it’s not the NCAA, but considering what was in the cupboard when coach B got here, I would say he has done a decent job getting the most out of what we have. Much better than Amaker would have.

UM has shown that if they do not play well, they can lose to anyone on the schedule. Until we get more consistant scorers, esp from the 3 point range, we will have games like this. Manny needs to develop a jump shot and we need some more sharp shooters to nail those 3′s. Maybe then Udoh will get more room to work inside.
