Michigan Adds Another to 2008 Recruiting Class

No, it’s not Terrelle Pryor. But Michigan has added another commitment to its recruiting class. Martavious Odoms, a wide receiver from Florida, signed with Michigan today after taking some extra time to think about where he wanted to go to college.

Odoms, a two-time South Florida Sun-Sentinel Super 11 selection, is headed to the University of Michigan.

Odoms signed his National Letter of Intent around 1 p.m. Sunday and is faxing it to Ann Arbor around 2 pm.

Odoms becomes the 24th recruit to sign with Michigan, which clearly shows you why George Morales is waiting to see if he needs to be greyshirted. If a miracle happens and Terrelle Pryor signs with Michigan, then the Class of ’08 would be oversigned and Morales would simply get his scholarship a year later than scheduled. If Pryor ends up going somewhere other than Michigan then I would expect Morales to sign soon after Pryor’s decision is official.

This latest addition to the recruiting class means there are now five players that will play the position of wide receiver or slot receiver at Michigan. Considering their was a big need for slot receivers when Rich Rodriguez first started recruiting for Michigan, I’d say things worked out pretty well. Terrence Robinson, Michael Shaw, and Odoms will all be able to play slot receiver, and Roy Roundtree could move to the inside as well if needed.

Odoms is a 4-star recruit on Scout and a 3-star on Rivals. He is pretty small in size (only 5’8″), but makes up for that with his speed as he runs a 4.45 40-yard dash according to Scout. Adding Odoms means more speed for the Michigan offense, which has received a big upgrade in that department thanks to commits like Sam McGuffie and Terrence Robinson.

For the time being, the recruiting class is up to 24 signees with 1 commit still waiting to sign his LOI. I imagine there could be an addition other than Pryor considering Rodriguez will recruit after signing day, but my guess is that this class will be finalized once Pryor makes up his mind, regardless of which school he chooses.

UPDATE: The Palm Beach Post is reporting that Odoms won’t fax his LOI in until tomorrow, so technically he isn’t officially a part of this recruiting class until then.

    Sean,

Which freshman do you think will play next fall and not redshirt? I really think that the recruits who have the best shot of playing early would be Stonum and the various recruits who will play the slot position. Whether or not Feagin will play or redshirt will depend on how good Threats is. I could see Threat playing with some designed plays for that one RB you were talking about moving to QB. He could play the role of what McFadden did at Arkansas. I bet the OL, TE, and DL will redshirt. I could see Cissoko and possibly Demens playing.

I would appreciate anyone’s thoughts/inputs. More classes like this and UM’s future is very bright!!

    Anon,

How does Shepard look better than Pryor? I saw Pryor’s film and he will be a stud in college, unless he goes to psu as they are terrible at developing qb’s. R. Casey and Robinson never fully developed at PSU, even though they were very highly recruited dual threat quarterbacks. Let’s not sound like sour grapes…I am sure if he committed to us, you would not be saying that.

For the record, I think UM will be fine with Feagin and whoever RR recruits in 2009. It is possible to win big without having a superstar qb. We must all trust RR’s evaluation skills at qb, especially since pat white was not really that highly ranked if I am not mistaken.

    big blue,

anon 7:03 PM is right about one thing, that Shepard IS a stud. In some eyes, he’s the Pryor of his class 09. Many see him as the real deal. I believe he ran and passed for a total of over 3,000 yards this year. He’s on RR’s radar for sure.

  7. Big Blue says:

    Hal,

I don’t disagree with you about Shepard being a stud. He is the type of qb that UM really needs right now. His stats are especially impressive. What I was referring to was how anon was proclaiming that Shepard looked better than Pryor, which I think is somewhat premature at this juncture. He may end up being just as good or better than Pryor, but it is too early to make such a claim right now. Let’s see how he does his senior year and then we can make a decision on who is better. (Of course, if he commits to the good guys, my opinions will not be 100% objective in favor of Shepard!!!) I believe RR will be able to get it done, especially with all the offensive weapons he got in this class. There are A TON of good wr’s to throw to!! Any good qb has to take notice of that!
