Monday Quick Hits: Our Hockey Team Owns
- The Michigan hockey team is off to an unbelievable start so far this season and it got even better after a pair of wins on Friday and Saturday. Michigan first beat Wisconsin 3-2 in the first game of the “College Hockey Showcase” on Friday and then beat Minnesota 5-1 on Saturday. The win over Minnesota is what really sticks out to me since Michigan has always struggled against the Golden Gophers in hockey. The win avenges an early season 4-3 loss that Michigan had against Minnesota, which actually is the only loss Michigan has had all season long. Right now the hockey team has a 13-1-0 record and will hope to improve that Friday and Saturday against Ohio State. Friday’s game is on FSN Detroit and Saturday’s game is on Comcast Local. The start time is 7:35 p.m. ET for both games.
Also, highlights from the BTN: Wisconsin game; Minnesota game.
- The basketball team played in the Great Alaska Shootout last week during Thanksgiving and ended up with a 1-2 record on the trip. Overall, Michigan struggled quite a bit in its games against Butler and Western Kentucky, both of which resulted in losses. Michigan did get a win against Eastern Washington, so it wasn’t a completely horrible trip.
Against Butler, Michigan went down by 17 early on but battled back and actually cut the lead down to 1 point. From then on, though, Butler pulled away as they were just shooting lights out from 3-point land. They nailed 3-pointer after 3-pointer after 3-pointer, which allowed them to pull away to a 79-65 win.
Michigan had better luck against Eastern Washington as it was the Wolverines that jumped out to an early lead. EWU attempted a comeback of its own, but Michigan held on and ended up winning 61-53. Finally, to finish up the Great Alaska Shootout, Michigan lost to Western Kentucky 73-69. Again Michigan got down by a pretty good deficit and nearly came back, but the Hilltoppers were able to hang on to the victory.
Boston College comes to Ann Arbor on Wednesday to play Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten 10 Challenge, so hopefully the Wolverines can pick up a much-needed win.
- MGoBlue.com has posted a section about of “Frequently Asked Questions” that will likely go along with the site’s new design.
- Michigan received a commitment over the weekend for football, which would seem unusual considering the team doesn’t have a coach beyond the bowl game. Either way, long-snapper George Morales (from North Las Vegas) was offered a scholarship by Michigan and immediately committed (he’s putting his 4.0 GPA to work by quickly jumping on the offer). Another unusual thing is for a long-snapper to be offered a scholarship right out of high school, but obviously the coaches felt Morales was good enough to get one. Normally, walk-ons compete to be the long-snapper and then get a scholarship, so this is just speeding up the process. Welcome to Michigan, George.
