Coaching Search Sped Up by LSU Loss?

I’ll have more on this Monday, but I felt it was necessary to point out that Michigan’s coaching search may end much quicker than we originally expected. If Les Miles is in fact the man that Bill Martin wants to hire, I would expect to hear about an offer and possibly a decision following the SEC title game next Saturday. Many of you may ask why that would happen if LSU could play for a national title, but that no longer is a concern after the Tigers lost to Arkansas in triple overtime today 50-48. The game itself was great, and although I was cheering for Les Miles and LSU, you’ve got to give props to Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, who carried the Razorbacks to victory.

Now that a national title is no longer a conflict of interest, I am expecting things to move forward quickly if Les Miles is the #1 candidate. I stress that this is all based on Miles being the #1 candidate, but from all accounts he is right now. With that being said, I am expecting Martin to make his move after next Saturday, and then we’ll have to see what happens from there. Would Miles stay on to coach LSU in its bowl game even if he accepts an offer to become Michigan’s head coach? Better yet, does LSU allow that if they should happen to lose in the SEC title game?

There are a lot of questions with few answers right now as this situation just becomes more and more complicated by the second. Even though this is a very complicated situation, it pales in comparison to the BCS. Can you believe that Missouri-Kansas tomorrow is a battle for not only a spot in the Big 12 title game but also a #1 ranking? Heck, what happens if the winner of that game loses to Oklahoma next week in the Big 12 title game? On top of that, things get even crazier if West Virginia is upset in its final two games.

With all of these upsets that could continue to happen, the one team that gets to stand by and watch it all happen is Ohio State. What makes me sick is the fact that there’s a great chance that the Buckeyes will end up playing for a national title. I guess in a season where so many teams have lost, to be upset only once is good enough to make you the #1 or #2 team in the country. With all of the parity in college football, anyone else up for a playoff?

Some blog tells Carr/Debord push hard for Ferentz to save the job. Do you think it makes sense?

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” and with all of the upsets in college football this year, what bothers me the most is that if Michigan had the year they had last year… they would be in the National Championship picture this year. I would say for sure this year makes a good case for a play off format. In my opinion if the division I-AA units can make it work, why can’t the big boys?

Callahan at NE just got canned.

Will Martin give him a call?

For the failures Callahan has had, he has had outstanding successes.

1)as OL coach, helped propel Wisky into the limelight (Rose Bowl win in 94, his last year at Wisky).

    2) He can RECRUIT and RECRUIT WELL.

3)Took Raiders to SuperBowl his first year as HC.

He has the experience and tools. Would he be a good fit at Michigan? I dunno.

And re: Debord. He could be the next HC.Let’s just hope they replace him with a innovative OC.

Read the SI article about Callahan and Nebraska. It’s the issue with the Celtics on the cover.

In a nutshell, Nebraska football was a family thing. Old players were always welcome back under Tom Osbourne. This continued under Frank Solich. This is a lot like the Michigan family. Bill Callahan brought a very business-like mentality to Nebraska, the former players were no longer welcome, and the Athletic Dept. building had heavy security around it. He also isolated the fans by doing this. As ESPN put it, he didn’t adopt the culture there.

And someone told me that Les Miles is the perfect Michigan man: he blows big games. We don’t want him. We need someone who will make Michigan a real perrenial power, one that can without a doubt take on any team in the nation. Kirk Ferentz is a good coach but he accomplished jack at Iowa.

    Candidates who can do it:
    Brian Kelly
    Chuck Martin (possibly)
    Paul Johnson

Urban Meyer is also a winner but he’s an asshole.

Would you be ok if an asshole kicked UM football up a few notches where he turned the tide against OSU and dominated the BIG 10 and national football for a decade?

At this point, I think it’s important to find a HC that elevates the program to point where the top players have the desire to play for the program. The top players don’t right now.

I hope Lloyd Carr remembers what goes around comes around. He’s such a “fine” person that he had to announce his retirement but in no way was it to hurt Miles or LSU. You guys can have Miles because he will never bring you what you want – to finally beat Ohio State. Thanks Coach Carr, I hope you get what you deserve one day.

MVictors.com blog and Brian at mgoblog, today are reporting a rumor that may have some merit about a possible offer to Iowa’s Ferentz.

He also indicated that Grand Valley’s AD may have been contacted by a UM rep (Lloyd Carr) to ask about Brian Kelly.

I am Okay about Kelly but not about Ferentz.
