Coaching Carousel in Full Swing

Before I get to the coaching carousel taking place across the nation, let me first update you guys on Michigan’s coaching search.

Rumors of Kirk Ferentz being offered/taking the Michigan job have continued today, but are not coming in at the same pace as they did yesterday. I’m guessing we’ll continue to hear various rumors in regards to the Iowa coach until a public denying/acceptance of the job by Ferentz happens, so just get used to it. Until then, it is all speculation.

Iowa’s athletic director did come out and say that Michigan hasn’t asked for permission to talk to Ferentz, but that really shouldn’t surprise anyone. I wouldn’t expect Bill Martin to ask for permission unless he is going to offer Ferentz the job. From what I’ve been told, the University would indirectly contact Ferentz to see what his interest in the job is and then would go from there. Basically, a third party would get in contact with him before anything on record had to be done to ensure that the public doesn’t find out about something if nothing comes of it.

Finally in regards to the Michigan job, although this has nothing to do with anything, the job has officially been posted. To find it go to this page and click on “Visit Today” under the “Visit as a Guest” section. You then have to click “Start Here” on the next page and then can find the job by searching under the criteria of “Athletics” in the “Job/Career Family” drop down list. Anyone thinking of applying just for fun?

Moving on to other coaching changes in the rest of college football, today there have been many shake ups in the coaching world. Hirings and firings have happened, so below is a list to get you caught up on the latest (going back to yesterday as well):

The latest coaching change that is just coming out is that Houston Nutt will not be back with Arkansas next season despite his upset win over LSU on Friday. Also, Indiana rewarded interim coach Bill Lynch for coaching IU to a bowl game by giving him a 4-year contract and taking the interim tag off his job title.

With so many changes taking place already and many to come in the future, one has to wonder when the Michigan job will be filled. Bill Martin said that ideally he would like to have the job filled by the end of the year, but if a coach is still in a bowl game, then the hire would have to wait. By the way, Iowa probably won’t make a bowl game, so hiring Kirk Ferentz wouldn’t present the problem of waiting. At the same time, not being in a bowl game rightfully is being perceived by most as a big negative considering Iowa only went 6-6 this year. Had the Hawkeyes not lost to Western Michigan on senior day, Iowa would be in a bowl game.
