Where Do I Even Begin?

By · Saturday, September 1, 2007 · 6:48 PM |  Share | 32 Comments

This was by far the worst game I’ve ever watched. Ever. I don’t want to take anything away from Appalachian State because they played their hearts out and deserved to win, but this is simply embarrassing. I’m embarrassed to be a Michigan fan after today. The players stunk, the coaching was even worse, and despite all of the mistakes, Michigan still found a way to get our hopes up one more time before that final kick was blocked.

I’ll get into this game more tomorrow, but for now I’m still processing what has just happened. I literally am shocked and stunned. Plus, out of the anger from this loss, I probably should cool off before just posting what’s on my mind. Regardless though, changes have to be made. Whether it is now or after the season, this coaching staff no longer is cutting it, and no matter how successful this team has been in the past, all of that is forgotten after today. Lloyd Carr and company got out coached and have now killed all hope and care for this season before it even got rolling. Congrats to Appalachian State on the win, but for us Michigan fans, it’s time to pick up the pieces.

Sidenote: Try to keep the comments from nothing but trolling. Trust me, I would talk trash too if this happened to Ohio State or someone like that, but let’s just try to limit it so this doesn’t end up like MGoBlog.

    From an Ohio State Fan:

Well said, its embarassing just as a big ten fan in general. I like the way you have given credit where due. I really think that App State team could give 1/2 the top 25 a run for their money.

  2. Cory says:

agreed. i admit, i was cheering my heart out for app state but im glad you give credit where credit is due.

i also agree that app state would give almost every team in 1-A a run for their money, probably a good 80%.

ASU being the two time defending national champs, with a high powered spread offense should not have been scheduled for a young Michigan defense so soon. The problem with Michigan is that the coaching has been very weak for several years. Lloyd Carr is a great guy but not a first line head coach in spite of his 1997 championship. Michigan is predictable and does not make adjustments well. USC, OSU and now the world knows it. It will be difficult for Michigan to win anything this season. It’s a shame because they have the talent but not the coaching.

  4. pbcity says:

    also from an OSU fan:

Michigan will rebound from this like they always do. It could of easily of been Ohio State if they App St on the schedule. The question is not about the loss but how will they respond. A setback is not a season of loss.

    GO BUCKS

    typical big ten

  6. Anonymous says:

App St could probably beat most of the Big Ten (think back to Championship Game last year when Michigan thought they should have had a rematch). There wasn’t a team in the Terrible Ten that deserved to be in the top five.

    HIRE BILL COWHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Anonymous says:

I AM CALLING IT “THE CURSE OF THE BIG TEN NETWORK”. I WILL DIE A MICHIGAN FAN BUT REFUSE TO CHEER ON ANOTHER LLOYD CARR TEAM AFTER THIS SEASON.
LETS GET BILL COWER OFF HIS COUCH AND INTO THE COACHING SPOT, ASAP!

  9. Anonymous says:

ummm. im pretty sure that bill cowher wouldnt take the job, but that is just my opinion.

sure, michigan is a good job but it isnt as good as usc, or notre dame, or even ohio state IMO. cowher will get an nfl job next season, he wont be coming to ann arbor. you can all keep dreaming though…

oh, and jon gruden wont came either. trust me.

    so sad but so true.

this loss exposed the rot at the core of michigan’s success during carr’s tenure. too much inbreeding at coaching. too much complacence that talent=wins.
god i feel sorry for the players first, the fans second, and way distant the coaches who now know their failure.

laughingstock for all time. NEVER can we brag again about all-time this or that without APP STATE as a rejoinder to put us in our place. It is that bad.

i hope i am wrong, but this could take a decade for recovery. programs faulter and this is a big one.

    COMPLETE NEW COACHING STAFF!!!

A LOSING/EVEN RECORD WITH A NEW 07′ COACH WOULD MAKE ME HAPPIER THAN A 9-3 SEASON WITH CARR.

And the “Pete Best Award” goes to Jake Long, Mike Hart and Chad Henne!!!

Opted out of millions for another sub-par season under Lloyd Carr.

getting beat by the Mountaineers is like Ned Beatty getting poked in the rear by a retarded hillbilly inbred while he’s being forced to squeal like a pig in that movie Deliverance. can it get any worse? the season is over in one game Michigan football is dead for a decade.

i have watched this game 2 times today..just finished watching it on BTN…and i kept asking the same question…”where is the fullback?” when we rushed with a fullback it was so much more effective! i mean getting chunks of yards at a time…this was not the first time i realized this…last year OSU and USC game was the same!…no double moves for any of our WRs, it was all go routes and slants… but their DBs played great…one more thing what was up with all the stunting from the d-line? didnt see alot of d-line getting subbed in and out

  15. Matt says:

“ASU being the two time defending national champs, with a high powered spread offense should not have been scheduled for a young Michigan defense so soon.”

Great post Anon 8:16. You absolutely hit the nail on the head with that one. You’re right: Michigan should not have lost that game but it was put in a no-win situation in which an inexperienced defense was put up against a strong team with nothing to lose. Bill Martin should have had greater foresight.

The players need to get this out of their heads. What if we didn’t lose this one but instead were upset by, say, Illinois? It would be treated like any other upset. But this stings especially, even if ASU is that good. And btw, they lost to South Carolina last year.

But Mich has to be able to say to themselves, it’s an upset like any other. USC lost to Oregon St. and UCLA, and we had ours. We won’t win the NC but we must salvage what we can, and try to defy expectations and beat OSU and win the Big 10 championship. Just like what you said, pbcity

  16. Matt says:

Fuck. I’m serious. If Michigan goes out and somehow has a respectable finish including a win over OSU, then people will just scratch their heads. Sure, Michigan will get shit for this, but it will be a fluke.

Remember, OSU almost lost to Bowling Green in 2003. Sure, they didn’t beat their archrival that year, but they had a two-loss season and won in the Fiesta Bowl against a respectable Kansas State team.

Goddammit Michigan players if you are reading this, you can get through this!! I need to!

  17. alstream says:

I don’t care if Appy State won 2 National titles in their division. I don’t care if our defense was weak. This should not have happened. THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. And we all know it.

Thanks for other fans who are being classy.

  18. Kirby says:

This loss was brutal. Couldnt even watch it because of the joke that is the BTN. But that was probably a good thing.

Credit to ASU. They beat us in our House. Embarassing.

How long before we hire Les Miles away from LSU? Even LSU knows he wants the job, that’s why he has that enormous penalty clause in his contract if he leaves early to be Michigan’s coach!

  19. Anonymous says:

Who will play Lloyd Carr when Disney releases the movie?

  20. Anonymous says:

Les Miles isn’t going to leave LSU and it’s not because of his contract. Don’t kid yourselves. LSU is a better job than Michigan.

  21. Anonymous says:

The truth is, Appalachian State beat Michigan because Michigan isn’t very good.

  22. Sir Putts-a-lot says:

I am somewhat ashamed that most PSU fans see this as a good thing. I don’t.

Perhaps I am rationalizing (I’d like for our game on the 22nd to mean something, and the winner to be considered in the top echelon) but Appalachian State would probably be a 6th or 7th place team in every BCS conference, and 4th or 5th in the Big East.

No, that doesn’t really make the loss feel any better and I know Michigan fans expect way more from their team than a loss to a Northwestern or Illinois level program… but the 1-AA label is VERY misleading.

  23. Anonymous says:

    From a Rutgers fan,

Watched the game yesterday and I know that had to be a crushing loss.

We felt a similar thing a few years ago when 1-AA New Hampshire came in and beat us at home the week after we beat Michigan State.

I know your situation is harder to deal with since you were ranked #5 and had National Championship aspirations, but they played a hell of a game.

Don’t be surprised if you guys run off 6-7 wins in a row.

Good luck the rest of the way.

  24. Anonymous says:

Unbelievable. After listening to this loss on the radio, I was very upset. After seeing the highlights on ESPN, I was IRATE! You have to see the highlights to realize how physically overmatched ASU was. That QB was about 150lbs and looked like he’s only been throwing a football for few months. Total embarassment. It’s been 5 years and Lloyd still doesn’t have a clue how to stop the spread. Oregon will be a loss also, chalk it up.

  25. Anonymous says:

I actually laughed and still laughed as an OSU fan, because I’m sorry no matter how many ways you cut it, a HOT, HOT, HOT school beat you, it’s just funny, with that said, OSU, finished second in the Big Ten in 2003 and was 11-2 and went to a BCS bowl.

We won only 16-13 against San Diego State, SAN DIEGO STATE, I mean that’s really not good, and then there was NC State that year and Purdue and Bowling Green. You can recover from this, but the key is can the fans and players? It wasn’t the greatest season in fact I tend to be upset because we lost to you guys and Wisconsin, but you can’t really be disappointed with an 11-2 record and a #4 finish. Plus like you guys we had NO running game and you defense is um shaky. The sky’s the limit, sort of.

It is time to put up or shut up Mike Hart!! The planning for this game belongs to the coaches, yes, but the players must have the right attitude and leadership and someone who picks fights with others outside the program needs to stop and leave it all out on the FIELD!!

Show you are a true leader by doing so on the field, do not talk about how Michigan never loses three or more games a year (2005), do not get in a fight with Jim Harbaugh by stooping to his level. If he is going to talk trash about his alma mater, then he is NOT someone to even acknowledge!!! Unless his points are valid, but that’s a coach’s problem!!!!

Do not give yourself nickname like H20 when you haven’t earned it or claim your apart of one of Michigan’s best freshman classes? If you were so good you would have won a bowl or beaten OSU. Your not going to a national title game this year, so there’s one less goal you didn’t achieve? Still feel like water who slips through cracks when two out of the past three times OSU beat you you had less than a hundred yards rushing and USC limited your game as well.

If Ohio State had such a terrible defense, what about yours??? Why didn’t you forget about the loss and try to motivate your team to win a BOWL GAME!!! I guess you will have another 9-3 year with losses to OSU and in a bowl game. You can still win the Big Ten and a bowl, but you need to put up or shut up.

I recognize the talent that Hart has, but as a result of all his whining this past summer, from Jim Harbaugh to Jake Long being better than Joe Thomas, I lost any respect I had for him. If he was a decent captain, he would realize yesterday was an awakening, you will not beat Oregon, Notre Dame or Penn State if you don’t get the team to refocus, drop ALL outside issues you have and show all your talent and class ON THE FIELD!!!

Mike, you clearly never took that advice to heart, because if you had maybe wouldn’t have been the first team ranked in the AP Poll to be beaten by a former I-AA. Michigan players if you were more motivated to win you would have not let Hart do all THE WORK, he can only do so much, but when he’s trash talking everyone and their mother there might be problems even just in having him recognize the need for a goal-oriented team.

To summarize, Hart if you are a true Michigan man you will leave it all on the field, stop bitching about things that do NOT directly affect football and show the hard work you did yesterday. Does it take losing to Appalachian State to get you to realize the real problem is in the Locker Room and not with the media or Harbaugh? Michigan players should see what at least Hart was sort of smart enough to figure out, give your best effort or why even show up?

You were only embarrassed to be a Michigan fan starting yesterday? You must be a little (lot) slow.
    Go OSU!!!

    TIME FOR A CHANGE!

When Bo first came to Michigan years ago as a new coach. He told his staff, “There’s a lot of talent here, and these are great kids; now all we need is the right people to coach them.” He brought in an excellent staff to get the most out of his players.

Lloyd Carr is a class act, and a smart guy however he is not a head coach at this level. I would have to question his staff as well because even though the players play the game, it’s the coaches that prepare the strategy and they call the offensive and defensive plays.

ASU is a nice football program but it should not have won that game. At least 60% of the blame goes to Carr and the coaching staff.

As much as I hate to say this, it is time for a coaching change at the University of Michigan.

It was difficult to see the loss to App St. I am a Cornhusker fan, and I could not believe it! I had to watch the highlights over and over again before I believed it was real! The season is not lost! To the players, you can still bring honor to Michigan by winning the division! Do not loose hope and sulk. Michigan has a rich tradition along the same line as ours. It would be sad and an injustice to see a proud program fall! It is up to you to see that it does not.

I am selling my tickets to the Penn State and Ohio State games. My plane tickets are for sale too, as are my hotel vouchers. I WILL NOT ATTEND ANOTHER GAME UNTIL THAT OLD, WASHED UP, RELIC IS AT HOME POPPING GERITOL PILLS IN HIS ROCKING CHAIR.
