Tuesday Quick Hits: Use Your Mouth Not Your Keys
- Drew Sharp is calling for Lloyd Carr to resign after Michigan has started the year 0-2 in embarrassing fashion. It is no shock that Sharp is behind this article because it is on the controversial side of things, meaning you know he wants to be there as well. I don’t mind that he wrote the article because at other schools more people would call for their coach to resign after a start like this, but it isn’t going to happen. Carr would be abandoning the football team in the middle of the season, and if he goes, then who is the interim coach? Mike DeBord? Talk about making the problem worse.
- The latest polls are out and Michigan doesn’t even have a single vote. That means that not even one pollster put U-M in the top 25, which is obviously something that would make no sense. A team that does have more than just a single vote in the AP Poll is Appalachian State, who received 19 after the rules were changed to allow all lower division teams to be included. I don’t blame voters for including them say at the very end of the poll, but Dave Goren put them 13th (HT: MGoBlog). That is just ridiculous.
- Audio from Lloyd Carr’s presser yesterday.
- MGoBlog looks at Cal coach Jeff Tedford, who will definitely be mentioned a lot in regards to the talk of who will replace Lloyd Carr whenever he steps down. Tedford appears to be a top candidate among quite a few lists I’ve seen, so keep his name in mind.
- Speaking of a coach that will be mentioned a lot, let’s talk about LSU coach Les Miles. Out of all the coaches, Miles is the one where there will be the most speculation. I won’t even get into if he would leave or if Michigan would even hire him right now since that is something to worry about down the road, but here are just a few interesting notes to keep in the back of your head.
–Miles is trying to deflect all questions regarding the Michigan job, for obvious reasons. It will linger around him the entire season, which really is a shame considering LSU is one of the country’s best this year and probably will play for a national title, but it is already starting.
–LSU will try to keep Miles on board if something does happen where the Michigan job opens up and Miles is contacted. Again, we don’t even know if Miles would leave, but the Tigers will make sure to do everything they can to keep him in Louisiana.
–Greg Mathews wasn’t penalized for his actions on Saturday involving a cheap shot on an Oregon player, but Coach Carr is aware of what happened.
“It’s not excusable and it’s not acceptable,” Carr said Monday. “I do think – I’ve watched the play and the official should have been on the play. There was something there that was done by the other player.
“In the spur of the moment, sometimes those things happen. It’s certainly something we’re not proud of. Greg’s not proud of. We don’t want it, and we won’t have it.”
- Maize n Brew thumbs through the Oregon game.
- Finally, I have to agree with the M Zone on the whole “key play” thing. I cannot stand when fans take their keys out of their pockets to jingle them around to single that it’s a key play. Rather than do that, just make as much noise as possible if Michigan is on defense. Why in the hell is there a need to jingle your keys to let people know that it is a big play? You don’t think people notice the situation at hand? EDSBS says it best:
This would be less appalling if it were alumni…but STUDENTS JINGLING KEYS? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? Young, healthy people with clean, fully-functioning lungs JINGLING KEYS TO MAKE NOISE!!!! My god, why don’t you hire Salvadorans to come yell for you? Or better still, they could just come in and cheer for you while you watch the game in the parking lot in peace and quiet and save you the trouble of screaming “DOWN IN FRONT!!!” (Because that would hurt your lungs, wouldn’t it?)
I couldn’t agree more. And while I’m on the subject of the students, I have something I’d like to say about the student section: get to the game on time! This is one of the things I can’t stand the most. Every game the one section that is last to fill up is the one for students, who are supposed to be the rowdiest fans there. Don’t get me wrong, once the game starts they are by far the loudest section in the stadium, but try to get there at least before Michigan’s band comes out onto the field. It’s just embarrassing to see the student section look so sparse early on. I understand people want to tailgate, but getting there 15 minutes before kickoff to see the band isn’t too early at all. For those of you in the section that do get there early, great job. Hopefully it’ll start rubbing off on other students.
