Carlos Brown Out with Broken Hand

Michigan’s depth at running back just took another big hit.

Carlos Brown, who switched back to RB after moving to CB for a short time, was going to compete to be Mike Hart’s backup as well as be one of the main kick/punt returners. Instead, he is going to be sidelined with an injury, leaving the Wolverines without yet another running back.

Brown, a sophomore from Franklin, Ga., broke his hand in practice this week and is expected to have surgery today.

According to Barron, Brown was running the ball in practice and got caught up in a pile where “somebody fell on his hand.”

Apparently, Brown kept playing but the severity forced him to stop.

I have absolutely no idea what the timetable for his return will be, but depending on the severity of the injury, it could be a prolonged amount of time before he’s back on the field. The problem with a running back having a broken hand is that carrying the ball will be much harder, especially with a cast.

Depending on how Mike Hart and Brandon Minor hold up throughout the season, and how Avery Horn plays, we may see Brown take a redshirt year. That would mean he and Kevin Grady could be out for the season. Although it hurts quite a bit this year, especially if any other injuries happen, it’ll help the running back situation in future years. I guess that’s something positive to take from this.

As far as the return game goes, time to go to plan B. For kick returns, there will be a few candidates for the job. Brandon Minor was actually mentioned before, but now that he can’t afford to get injured, I wonder if that will change things at all. I’d expect we see a few players try out for the return duties. Then for punt returns, it appears right now that Greg Mathews will have that job. No offense to any of the new players taking over the return duties, but man, I wish Steve Breaston was still here.
