QB Steven Threet Transfers to Michigan

In the middle of an important span of a few weeks in the recruiting world, Michigan added a quarterback to its roster in a different way. Rather than picking up another committment, the Wolverines welcomed in a transfer that will add future depth to the quarterback position.

QB Steven Threet, originally from Adrian, Michigan, was a 4-star recruit from the Class of 2007 that signed with Georgia Tech and even enrolled at the school early. However, he has now decided that GT isn’t the place for him. Threet was given a release from Georgia Tech, allowing him to transfer, and visited Ann Arbor yesterday. Soon after arriving, Threet officially decided to transfer to Michigan.

This really is like picking up a second committment from a quarterback for this year’s recruiting class. Threet and ’08 commit John Wienke will give the QB position greatly needed depth in the future. Next season, Ryan Mallett will no doubt be the starter, but behind him was really a mystery just last month. Now, however, we’ll see Wienke, Threet, and David Cone battle it out for the backup position, and after Mallett leaves, battle it out for the starting job.

While on the topic of recruiting, Threet wasn’t the only one visiting Ann Arbor yesterday. A few ’08 recruits were in AA on visits that will hopefully help add a few commitments in the next couple of weeks. I won’t name them specifically, but the players are pretty highly touted and would be great additions to this team.

I also actually visited Ann Arbor yesterday, but not for athletic reasons, obviously. Since I will be applying to the University of Michigan soon, I took an official tour of the campus to get an in-depth look at it since I usually only am at the Big House, Crisler, or Yost while in AA. The visit was nice, but what was interesting was who I ran in to during it. I saw Jerrett Smith while at the Diag. Then after the visit, saw who I think was Graham Brown leaving Crisler Arena. I headed over to that area to see if construction was still going on at Michigan Stadium in the seating bowl (from what I saw it was done) and instead noticed Brown leaving the tunnel at Crisler. Overall, it was a pretty good day.
