Forcier to Transfer?

Brian of mgoblog put up a post yesterday stating that quarterback Jason Forcier is going to transfer. Nothing is official yet, but Brian is a reliable news source when it comes to stuff like this, so take it for what it’s worth.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jason Forcier can read the writing on the wall — it says “Jesus Christ, that kid can throw eighty yards” — and is transferring to Stanford effective at the end of the semester. Lloyd is not happy about it.

This isn’t shocking news at all, but comes a little out of nowhere. I saw pictures from spring practice that showed Forcier laughing with teammates and it really appeared that he was happy here. I guess Forcier just came to a realization that he wouldn’t be seeing the field as a starter at Michigan.

What does this mean now? First, let’s discuss the impact for this season. Forcier was Chad Henne’s backup last season and was probably going to be in the same role again this spring had it not been for an apparent injury that has limited his time on the field. When the 2007 season begins, true freshman Ryan Mallett will be Henne’s backup and it is all but guaranteed that he won’t use his redshirt. Carr already has said that he doesn’t have plans to redshirt Mallett, but with this latest development I see it as a lock for Mallett to see some playing time.

Forcier transferring not only has an effect on the depth chart but also opens up a scholarship. Michigan has already offered Dayne Crist, a quarterback from Southern California, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Brendon Kay, a quarterback from Marine City, Michigan, gets an offer as well. I’ve seen Kay play in person as he is local to where I live (and smoked my high school this past season), and he is pretty good. I don’t necessarily think Michigan should use a scholarship on him, but if there is one open then it may be a possibility.

Stay tuned for more developments to see if this becomes official.
