Free Press: Carr to Continue Coaching Beyond 2007
It was reported a week or so ago that Lloyd Carr’s contract was changed very slightly in a way that hints at retirement coming closer. The exact change was in the wording of a deferred compensation account that pays Carr $300,000 every so often for being the head coach of Michigan football. He will receive that bonus if he still is the head coach until on July 1, 2007. For next year’s bonus, Carr just has to be employed in any capacity at the University of Michigan until July 1, 2008. That change prompted great speculation that Carr was planning on hanging up the whistle soon. This was my response to that:
“One thing that is important from reading this is to know that this news does not mean Lloyd Carr will retire after next season. It does not even mean he will retire after 2008 or 2009. This just gives Carr the chance to collect the next $300,000 without having to be the head football coach. I guess you could say Carr is one step closer to eventually retiring, meaning that it will likely be within the next few seasons if not after 2007.”
I’m not alone in thinking that this really doesn’t mean all that much as Carr likely will be here a few years. The Free Press thinks the same thing:
“Unless Michigan plays in the national title game next year, which could spur Carr to retire on top, you can expect Carr to stick around for 2008 and maybe beyond. He had to alter the clause at some point if he wanted that bonus after he retires. It makes sense to change it sooner, just in case something unusual happens (like a national title or health scare) and Carr changes his mind.”
I would also expect Carr to be around for at least a couple more years, but if he were to retire after the 2007 season, hopefully the reason is a national title for the Wolverines.
