Michigan’s Michael Phelps Sets World Record

Swimmer Michael Phelps is best known for his astounding performance in the 2004 Summer Olympics where he brought home 8 total medals. Since then, he has still been competing in events, but he also has been calling Ann Arbor home. Phelps is currently a student at the University of Michigan, following his longtime coach Bob Bowman, who took the job as head swimming coach at U-M.

Phelps cannot swim on the Michigan team as prior endorsements have taken away his amateur status, but he still is involved by being a volunteer assistant coach. It’s too bad he can’t swim for Michigan, because he would most definitely dominate for the Wolverines.

Although it’s not with the Michigan team, I felt it necessary to mention this because Phelps is a Michigan student. This past weekend at the Pan Pacific Swim Championships, Phelps was on a mission to break as many world records as possible. He did just that and a little bit more. During the event, Phelps broke 3 records, 2 of which that already belonged to him. Phelps set new world records in the 200-meter individual medley and 200-meter butterfly standard, and was apart of the 4×100-meter relay team that also set a new world record. Nice to see Phelps represent Michigan in a good way.
